Editorial and Update Policy
Texas Paycheck Calculator publishes educational calculators and articles about take-home pay, federal payroll taxes, deductions, and Texas wage rules. This policy explains how we research, review, update, and correct that work.
Our editorial principles
We aim for every page to be accurate, understandable, transparent about its limits, and useful to a reader making a paycheck estimate. We separate verified facts from examples, label the tax year, show important assumptions, and link to primary sources wherever practical.
Our content is educational. We do not present Muzammal Amin as a CPA, Enrolled Agent, payroll provider, financial adviser, or attorney, and we do not publish individualized tax, legal, financial, or payroll advice.
How we research a page
We begin with sources that create, administer, or report the relevant rule. Depending on the topic, these include:
- the Internal Revenue Service for federal withholding, payroll-tax rules, forms, publications, and annual limits;
- the Social Security Administration for the Social Security contribution and benefit base;
- the Texas Constitution, Texas statutes, and the Texas Workforce Commission for Texas tax, wage, payday, and employer rules;
- the U.S. Department of Labor for federal wage-and-hour rules;
- the U.S. Census Bureau and Bureau of Labor Statistics for demographic, income, and occupational data.
Credible secondary sources may help us identify reader questions or explain context, but they do not replace an available primary source for a material rate, threshold, formula, or legal rule. The principal references used across the site are listed on our Sources and References page.
Writing and review process
Before publication, we aim to:
- identify the applicable tax year and effective date;
- verify material rates, thresholds, and formulas against current primary sources;
- distinguish statutory rules from examples and simplifying assumptions;
- test calculator logic at ordinary values, boundaries, and annual caps;
- add source links, a last-reviewed date, and a clear explanation of important exclusions;
- review the page for readability, internal consistency, and misleading certainty.
Calculator methodology receives additional review because a small implementation error can affect many results. Our Calculation Methodology describes the intended order of operations, supported inputs, rounding, tests, and known limitations.
Update schedule
We use several update cycles rather than treating every page the same:
- Annual tax-cycle review: Federal brackets, withholding tables, Social Security limits, retirement limits, health-account limits, and related calculator rules are reviewed when official figures for a new tax year are available and again before that year is offered in the calculators.
- Event-driven review: A page is reviewed when an agency publishes a material rule change, court decision, revised form, corrected publication, or other change that affects the page.
- Periodic review: Core calculator guides and trust pages are reviewed at least every 6 months. Stable reference pages are reviewed at least annually.
- Link and presentation checks: Important source links, dates, disclosures, and calculator labels are checked periodically and when a reader reports a problem.
A displayed “last reviewed” date means the material claims and cited sources were checked on that date. It is not a promise that no agency has published a change since then.
Use of software and AI-assisted tools
We may use calculation software, code assistants, search tools, or artificial-intelligence tools to help organize research, test formulas, identify inconsistencies, or prepare an early draft. These tools are not treated as authoritative sources. Material claims, rates, thresholds, and formulas must be checked by a human against the cited primary sources before publication.
Independence and commercial influence
Advertising, sponsorship, or affiliate relationships do not determine calculator results or change our source hierarchy. Sponsored material, if introduced, will be labeled. Compensation does not guarantee favorable coverage, placement, or conclusions. See our Advertising and Affiliate Disclosure.
Corrections and reader feedback
We welcome specific, evidence-based corrections. Material changes to a formula, threshold, legal statement, or result explanation are recorded in the public changelog when appropriate. Learn how to report an issue in our Corrections Policy or email contact@texaspaycheckcalculator.org.
